Preserving Tradition Today

Established in 1855, Manatee County gets its name from the Florida manatee that is the official marine mammal of the state. Prior to the period of European colonialism that shaped the American landscape, Manatee County was inhabited by various Native American tribes.

During Spain’s colonial expansion, Spanish explorers circled the globe in the hopes of discovering new territory to claim in the name of the Spanish crown. The southern mouth of the Manatee River is considered to be the site where Hernando de Soto made landfall on his expedition to North America. He is also credited with being the first European to cross the powerful Mississippi River during the same expedition.

Today, Manatee County is home to several National Protected Areas:

  • De Soto National Memorial
  • Passage Key National Wildlife Refuge
  • Lake Manatee State Park
  • Myakka River State Park

In addition to the various wildlife parks, Manatee County operates a heralded library system that began serving this community in 1898. In 1964, all of the libraries in the county organized into a county library system. This system started to offer programs such as a bookmobile that delivered books to those living in rural parts of the county and “Talking Books” for the blind members of the county.
